Opening a Thai bank account

The rules are national. The answers are branch by branch. No Thai law bars a tourist or a Destination Thailand Visa holder from opening an account. Yet DTV success runs about 20% at some Bangkok Bank branches and 15% at Kasikorn. A work permit, an LTR visa or a retirement extension still gets you in for sure.

Current at 9 September 2026. Dollars at THB 32.9 to US$1, the rate of 8 September 2026.

Nothing in the law says no. The bank's compliance desk does

No published rule stops a tourist or a DTV holder from opening a Thai account (thailandelitevisas.com, 5 May 2026). What stops them is the bank's own policy. The Bank of Thailand's "mule account" rules make a bank liable for fraud. That covers any account it opens (mbmg-group.com, 18 Feb 2026).

StatusCan you open an account?
Tourist visa, visa exemptionNo. No major bank accepts either in 2026 (statrys.com, 22 Apr 2026)
DTVUnreliable. Refused at most counters; branch discretion decides
Non-Immigrant B, O or ED (accredited)Yes
LTRYes, accepted normally
Thailand PrivilegeYes. SCB waives the work-permit requirement

Since December 2025, the Bank of Thailand grades every account against a mule-account risk list. It also caps daily transfers by tier (Bank of Thailand, Dec 2025). Some 2024-era DTV accounts were frozen during compliance reviews (mbmg-group.com, 30 Jun 2026). Since late 2025, you must show up in person. Everyone sits for a face scan and a passport chip-read. Copies no longer pass the first check in 2026. The passport must have six months left on it, plus a stamp that matches your reason for staying.

A Destination Thailand Visa buys a stamp, not a bank card

The DTV counts as a tourist visa under the Immigration Act B.E. 2522, despite its five-year term. Bank systems read it that way (mbmg-group.com, 18 Feb 2026), so getting a DTV does not get you a counter.

BankPosition
Bangkok BankFirmly wants a long-stay visa, but the likeliest to bend
KasikornExplicitly excludes the DTV by policy
SCBRefuses; almost always wants a work permit
Krungsri, KrungthaiRefuse; rare exceptions with a residence certificate

No bank publishes a table like the one above. It rests on aggregator reports, not bank policy pages. CHECK Success sits around 20% at some Bangkok Bank branches and 15% at Kasikorn (visamanager.io, 6 Mar 2026). One source flatly says no major bank accepts a DTV at all (statrys.com, 22 Apr 2026). The other says it depends on the branch and the officer (issacompass.com, 28 May 2026).

Branch geography is the whole game. Branches near coworking spaces, colleges and business districts already see more LTR and Non-Immigrant clients. Expats call them the flexible branches (visamanager.io, 6 Mar 2026). A suburban branch that rarely sees a foreigner is a harder counter to work.

The certificate of residence is now the price of entry

Every 2026 account needs a certificate of residence from Immigration, or a yellow house book (tabien baan lueang). That book is now the "gold standard" proof of address (issacompass.com, 28 May 2026). The embassy route is closed at most missions, the US since 1 March 2023 (sea101 ch. 9). It also gates a Thai driving licence. So the two pages need the same papers.

Deposits stay low and stable at every major bank.

Source: statrys.com, 22 April 2026. A DTV holder is asked for THB 10,000–25,000 ($304–760) at the counter just to try (visamanager.io, 6 Mar 2026). CHECK That is well above the published floor. The gap is the filter, not a fee. A single transaction of US$200,000 or more at an authorised bank triggers a document request. That covers buying, selling, depositing or withdrawing foreign currency. The bank asks unless it has already run its own background check on you. This is standing practice, not a new order (Bank of Thailand, Exchange Control Regulation, 26 May 2023).

No account, no QR code, no salary, no clean condo purchase

PromptPay QR is Thailand's payment rail, used everywhere down to street stalls. A foreign card cannot scan it. Six foreign-card ATM trips a month cost about THB 1,500 ($46) in fees. That is close to THB 250 ($7.60) each, and up to THB 350 ($10.64) on some Mastercards (The Thaiger, 11 Aug 2026; sea101 ch. 12). Without an account you cannot receive a Thai salary. You also cannot hold the THB 800,000 ($24,316) deposit the retirement extension requires.

Wise holds a local Thai licence. It gives a local-currency balance, a card that works in Grab, and transfer rates far better than a bank. It is not a substitute for a local account. PromptPay QR scan-and-pay is rolling out for Thai-registered accounts. It lands by August 2026 for signups after 21 January 2026, and by October 2026 for earlier ones. There is a trade-off. A Thai-registered Wise card loses Thailand ATM access altogether. Existing cards are cancelled by September 2026 (wise.com, 11 Sep 2026).

Thailand has no tourist wallet at all. Malaysia's Touch 'n Go lets a tourist register on a foreign number. It then pays DuitNow QR at two million merchants. Nothing here works before a bank does.

If you clear the visa bar, opening an account is routine, not a fight. If you are on a tourist stamp or a DTV, budget for Wise. Treat a real account as a lucky branch, not a plan.

Chapter 12 of Living in Southeast Asia 101 runs the banking table across all seven countries. It also lists which apps clear a local QR code.

What this page does not cover

  • Which Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn branches DTV holders have succeeded at, and what they were asked to show
  • The paper order for a first account: certificate, lease, mobile SIM, biometric scan, in what sequence
  • What Wise, Revolut and cross-border QR each cover and where each one still fails you
  • The Foreign Exchange Transaction form threshold and how a condo wire should be structured
  • How the 90-day report and TM30 receipt feed into the certificate of residence a bank will accept

In Pattaya, the account and the retirement visa are the same problem. The deposit route needs one to get the other. If a condo is next, buying in Phuket explains why the wire has to come before the papers. Still choosing where at all? Compare all ten cities on banking, rent and air before you book a flight.
