Bangkok vs Singapore: which should you move to?

A comfortable month costs $2,180 in Bangkok and $4,910 in Singapore. Cost is where the comparison starts, not where it ends.

If you have no Singapore job offer, pick Bangkok. The choice is already made for you. Singapore's only ordinary route in is an Employment Pass at S$5,600 a month, applied for by a local employer (Ministry of Manpower, 7 July 2026). There is no nomad visa and no retirement visa. Bangkok's DTV asks for savings and no employer at all.

Current at 9 September 2026. Dollars at THB 32.9 and SGD 1.27 to US$1, the rates of 8 September 2026, held across the series rather than tracked.

The gap is 2.25 times, and $163,800 over five years

A room in someone else's public flat, at S$900–1,500 ($710–1,180), costs more than a whole one-bedroom in central Bangkok (Numbeo, read 10 September 2026).

No Singapore EF EPI 2025 score exists: it was reclassified as native English-speaking from that edition. The 609, 631 and 635 readings are prior-edition scores (EF EPI 2025 via Wikipedia, read 11 September 2026).

CHECK The dollar figures use held rates, THB 32.9 and SGD 1.27 at 8 September 2026. On 10 September 2026 they were THB 32.995 and SGD 1.2664 (frankfurter.dev).

Rent and food carry four-fifths of the gap

Both books publish the same seven-line budget, so the gap subtracts. Three lines carry 91% of it.

Rent alone is $1,844 of the $2,730 monthly gap, and rent plus food is $2,242. Insurance, utilities, transport, phone and internet, added across both budgets, come to $245 a month (both books' budget tables, September 2026).

At the floor the shape holds. Of the $1,020 basic gap, rent is $580 and food is $238, and one line runs the other way. Singapore's basic utilities cost S$60 ($47) against Bangkok's THB 2,000 ($61), because a public flat on fans beats a studio's own air conditioner.

There is no lifestyle edit that closes this. You sign a cheaper lease or you move cities.

Bangkok wins the cost axis, by $2,730 a month and $163,800 over five years. Singapore's basic column sits $190 below Bangkok's comfortable one, and buys a room instead of a flat.

Both totals sit apart from the aggregators. Expatistan gives Bangkok THB 55,438 ($1,685), read 8 September 2026, and Singapore S$7,058 ($5,560), read 7 September 2026. Numbeo's Singapore holds at S$4,260 ($3,364), updated 8 September 2026. The books price a new arrival's first year, with a rent line and an insurance line no aggregator carries.

The visa is where this stops being close

The DTV asks for THB 500,000 ($15,200) held three months, and no employer at all (thaiembassy.com, 1 September 2026). It runs five years, multiple entry, at 180 days an entry, extendable in country to 360 (thailawonline.com, 7 September 2026). The fee is THB 10,000 ($303), or €350 at Paris. You may not work for a Thai employer or take Thai clients. Two Thai fallbacks beat any Singapore option: the LTR at ten years for $80,000 a year in passive income, and Thailand Privilege at THB 650,000 ($19,800). The thresholds are on the Thailand DTV visa page.

Singapore's ordinary route is the Employment Pass, and a local employer applies for it. The floor is S$5,600 a month ($4,410), or S$6,200 ($4,880) in financial services. Both rise, to S$6,000 and S$6,600, on 1 January 2027. At 45 or older it is S$10,700–11,800 now and S$11,500–12,700 from that date ($8,430–9,290, then $9,060–10,000). You need at least 40 COMPASS points, and the pass ends when the job does (Ministry of Manpower, 7 July 2026). The ladder is on the Employment Pass salary floors.

Singapore has no nomad visa and no retirement visa of any kind. A visit pass is normally 90 days, and it rents you no public flat and opens no bank account (ica.gov.sg, read 8 September 2026).

Bangkok wins this axis, and not narrowly. For a reader without a job offer, Singapore is not expensive. It is closed.

Singapore has the better system, Bangkok the better network

Singapore runs six MRT lines and 146 stations, carrying 3.49 million journeys a day in 2025. A card fare is S$1.28–2.57 ($1.01–2.02), a monthly pass about S$122 ($96), and any contactless card or phone works (Public Transport Council, effective 27 December 2025). Covered walkways run from almost every public block to its station. Changi is 45 minutes and about S$2.20 from City Hall.

Bangkok runs nine systems and beats that on price, with fares from THB 8. The BTS has 62 stations and about 900,000 riders a day at THB 17–47 ($0.52–1.43). Two MRT lines, two monorails, the Red line, the Airport Rail Link and a BRT fill in the rest (Bangkok, honestly, September 2026). The BTS takes no bank card in 2026, and a Rabbit card costs THB 200 and needs your passport.

Singapore runs 21 min 21 s per 10 km against Bangkok's 22 min 59 s, which costs a Bangkok driver 115 hours a year (TomTom Traffic Index 2025). Singapore taxis run their meters, at a flag-down of S$4.60 in a hybrid. In Bangkok, refusals and no-meter demands are the top complaint, 720 of 2,120 in 2023.

Singapore's Certificate of Entitlement hit a record S$133,009 for Category A on 9 September 2026, up from S$128,501 on 19 August (motorist.sg, LTA OneMotoring, read 10 September 2026).

Singapore wins getting around. Only one of these cities lets you tap a bank card and walk to the station under cover, as getting around Singapore sets out.

CHECK Whether the BTS takes a bank card is disputed. The book and the research pass of 8 September 2026 say no. A rail guide dated April 2026 says tap works at most stations, at THB 17–65. The bts.co.th fare page was unreadable to both. Buy the Rabbit card.

Singapore wins the year on air, and lost the week this page was written

Singapore averaged 11.9 µg/m³ of PM2.5 across 2025 (IQAir, read 10 September 2026). Bangkok's city average hit 58.1 µg/m³ on 14 January 2026, with Bang Rak worst of twelve districts at 86.9, which ran 61.2–86.9 (nationthailand.com, 14 January 2026). Thailand's own 24-hour standard is 37.5 µg/m³ and the World Health Organization's is 15.

The difference is a season against a window. Bangkok is bad from December to April and worst from January to March. The city told staff to work from home one day a week through those three months in 2026 (Nation Thailand, 6 October 2025). Singapore's risk runs August to October, when smoke from Sumatra and Kalimantan can drift across.

On 11 September 2026 Singapore's haze peaked and then cleared. Central 24-hour PSI hit 99 at 02:00 SGT and PM2.5 55 µg/m³ at 03:00, against Bangkok's districts at 73 to 86 the same window (NEA via data.gov.sg). By 04:00 SGT on 12 September the central reading was back to 76. No like-for-like comparison exists; IQAir publishes no current Bangkok annual mean.

Singapore wins the year on air. Three months of Bangkok January is a season you plan around. One open haze window is a footnote. With a respiratory condition, read the best time to move to Singapore.

Bangkok has a flat at every price, and a title in your own name

Bangkok's band table runs a one-bedroom from THB 5,000–14,500 ($150–440) basic to THB 45,000–130,000 ($1,370–3,950) ultra. Singapore's cheapest real housing is a room in someone else's public flat at S$900–1,500 ($710–1,180). That money rents a luxury one-bedroom in Bangkok, where the luxury band starts near $850. Singapore has no bottom.

Ownership runs the same way. Thailand hands a foreigner a freehold condominium title, in your own name, with no approval and no minimum price. Foreign ownership must stay under 49% of the building's saleable floor area, and the transfer fee is 2% (Condominium Act B.E. 2522, read 10 September 2026). Singapore charges 60% additional buyer's duty on top of the price. On a S$2,000,000 flat that is S$1,269,600 ($999,700) of duty, or 63% of the price. Per square metre, Bangkok's mid band is $2,430–3,950 against Singapore prime freehold at $28,410–49,430.

A kilo of chicken breast is $3.60–3.80 against $9.85–11.00, and dinner for two is $37 against $67 (Numbeo and Expatistan, read 10 September 2026). Private cover for Bumrungrad and Samitivej runs THB 40,000–60,000 a year ($1,215–1,824), where Singapore's comfortable column budgets S$3,600 a year ($2,835).

The two guides name 52 buildings across their ten price bands, each with a one-bedroom rent, a two-bedroom rent and a price per square metre.

CHECK Every Singapore duty figure here rests on a primary nobody could read. The rates are in force since 27 April 2023, but iras.gov.sg publishes them on JavaScript pages neither research pass could open. The rest is in Singapore stamp duty for foreign buyers, and the Thai side in buying a condominium in Bangkok.

In Singapore nothing is rigged and nothing gets chased

Electricity is the regulated tariff, opened in your own name, at 34.78 cents a kWh including tax for 1 July to 30 September 2026. Bangkok's government tariff is THB 4.20–4.70 all-in ($0.13–0.14), and re-billing buildings charge THB 6–8. That markup never appears in the rent, and over a twelve-month lease it costs a one-bedroom tenant THB 6,000–19,200 ($182–584). Ask at every viewing who reads the meter, a question renting an apartment in Bangkok answers in full.

Then the forms. Singapore has no police registration and no 90-day report. Bangkok has a TDAC arrival card, a TM30 the landlord owes within 24 hours, and a TM47 every 90 days with a fine of THB 2,000 rising to THB 5,000. A residence certificate at THB 200 gates the driving licence. Singapore's own lease costs sit in renting an apartment in Singapore.

The water is drinkable. Singapore's supply is PUB-treated and fluoridated, and no budget column in that book carries a bottled-water line. Bangkok's tap water is drunk by nobody, so budget a 19-litre delivery under THB 200 a month and a purifier at THB 3,000–7,000.

Your money reaches your own account. PayNow moves it by phone number, and the QR code is on nearly every hawker stall. Bangkok's PromptPay needs a Thai bank account, and DTV holders are reported to succeed at about 20% at selected Bangkok Bank branches and 15% at Kasikorn. Singapore's banks want a residence pass, but the pass that lets you in opens the account.

Bangkok's tariff moved after the book closed. The Energy Regulatory Commission capped the first 200 household units at THB 3.00 for September to December 2026 (erc.or.th, 7 September 2026). That cap targets exactly the THB 6–8 resort rate re-billing buildings charge, so the book's "legal" now means only an owner letting a single condominium.

Your situation picks the city, not your preference

Pick Bangkok if:

  • You fund yourself and have no employer in either country. The DTV asks for savings. The Employment Pass asks for a job.
  • Your budget clears about $2,180 a month, and you want a one-bedroom near a train rather than a room in a stranger's flat.
  • You intend to buy. A freehold title in your own name for a 2% fee beats 60% duty at every price.
  • You can leave for three months, or spend January to March indoors behind a purifier.

Pick Singapore if:

  • You hold a signed Employment Pass offer with a housing allowance written into it, starting before 1 January 2027.
  • Your offer clears the floor by a distance. S$5,600 gross does not reach a S$6,240 month, and 183 days makes you a tax resident.
  • You have a respiratory condition, cannot leave Bangkok from January to March, and also have that offer.
  • You want every lease, form and hospital consultation in English, because it is an official language.

CHECK One date matters if you plan to share. Singapore's occupancy cap of eight, for four-room and larger flats, lapses on 31 December 2026 unless extended, and no source read on 10 September 2026 confirmed one.

Most readers should pick Bangkok

Most readers should pick Bangkok. It is the free sampler's default and the arithmetic agrees. The DTV needs no employer where the Employment Pass needs one at S$5,600 a month, and a foreigner owns a Thai condominium freehold for 2% where Singapore charges 60%. You pay for it in three months of air, and in paperwork that never ends. Start at moving to Bangkok and the cost of living in Bangkok.

One reader should pick Singapore. That is someone holding a signed Employment Pass offer with a housing allowance written into it, starting before 1 January 2027. All three parts have to be true. There has to be an offer, because there is no other legal way in. It has to clear the floor by enough to fund more than a common room. And it has to be filed in 2026, before the floor rises. For that reader the sampler's advice stands word for word. Get the job first, then negotiate the housing allowance harder than the salary, then read moving to Singapore.

Some readers should pick neither. If you fund yourself, your ceiling is under about $1,600 a month, and you cannot leave the region for three months a year, neither city fits. Bangkok's own book sends anyone under about $1,200 elsewhere, and Singapore's door is shut without an employer.

Look at moving to Kuala Lumpur instead. Comfortable there is $1,111–1,605 and basic is $568–741 (the series' city figures, September 2026). It is the only city in the series that clears that ceiling and still buys a flat with a pool. The DE Rantau pass wants $24,000 a year in foreign-sourced income, and 90 days visa-free let you test the commute first. A foreigner owns freehold, and the air is clean outside the June-to-September haze. Chiang Mai is cheaper at $1,584 comfortable, but unbreathable from February to April, after two burning seasons that ended in emergency disaster declarations. Kuala Lumpur costs you a car. Chiang Mai costs you three months of air. If the pair was never the right question, compare all ten cities.

  • Bangkok's eight neighbourhoods soi by soi, and Singapore's nine areas by district number, each with its named drawback
  • The four documents a Thai driving licence needs, in order, from the TM30 receipt to the medical certificate
  • Singapore's public-housing rules: the six eligible passes, the 8%-of-neighbourhood quota, the two-year approval, the six-month minimum let
  • The car arithmetic line by line, from a S$22,000 open-market value to S$190,000–200,000 on the road

Rent decides two-thirds of this gap, so the eight areas foreigners live in sets Bangkok's real range. On the other side, the nine areas foreigners live in does the same job, town by town.
