Cost of living in Bangkok
A comfortable single life in Bangkok costs THB 71,700 a month, about $2,180, rent included. A basic life costs THB 31,900 ($970). Luxury runs THB 194,800 ($5,920). Those are September 2026 figures, at THB 32.9 to the dollar. Rent takes about a third of the middle budget. Food is the line you control.

The grocery bill that splits the city in two
An imported diet costs about THB 15,000 a month. Shopping and eating local costs about THB 6,000 (ExpatDen, 2 September 2026). The gap is THB 9,000, roughly $270. That is the biggest single choice in moving to Bangkok. Nobody else makes it for you.
Rent moves more money than food. But the area sets your rent, and you pick the area once. Food you decide every week. Long-stayers all land in the same place. Eat local most days, and treat imported food as a treat.

Health insurance is the line people delete. A policy runs THB 40,000 to 60,000 a year ($1,215–1,824) for THB 5M to 35M of cover. The public system is not built for you. The private hospitals are why people fly here for care.
No published source gives a luxury budget for Bangkok. CHECK That column is built from the book's own top-band rents, not from a survey. Read it as a shape, not a count.

Wet markets sell produce at a third to a half of supermarket prices. Khlong Toei is the cheapest and Or Tor Kor is the premium one.
What actually costs money here
- Imported wine. A drinkable bottle starts at THB 600–750 ($18–23). Expatistan's average bottle was THB 1,027 ($31) on 8 September 2026.
- Imported cheese and butter. A 200 g block of imported cheddar runs THB 180–260 ($5.50–7.90). Local cheese is about THB 580 a kilo. CHECK Supermarket price pages would not load, so that range comes from product listings, not from a shelf.
- Beef. Thai-French beef is about THB 500 a kilo ($15).
- Cars. Non-ASEAN cars carry an 80% import tariff. European models cost two to three times their home price.
- Air conditioning in March. Electricity runs THB 800–1,500 a month without AC, and THB 3,000–5,000 in the March to May hot season (ExpatDen, 3 August 2026).
What barely costs anything here
- A cooked lunch, at THB 70–100 ($2.20–3.10). This is the reason the food line works.
- Taxis. Flag fall is THB 35 ($1.06). An 8 km trip is about THB 202 ($6.10) (Expatistan, 8 September 2026).
- Mobile data, at THB 300–500 a month ($9–15). Home fibre at 500 Mbps is about THB 600 ($18).
- Laundry, at THB 49 a kilo ($1.50), washed, dried and folded.
- Dental work. It is one of the things people fly in for.
The mistake that wrecks a Bangkok budget
People budget one utilities figure for twelve months. Numbeo's monthly average is THB 3,515 ($107) for an 85 sqm flat (24 August 2026). That average is real, and so is the March bill of THB 5,000. Budget for the hot season and the other nine months feel cheap.
The second mistake costs less but stings more. Without a Thai bank account you pay THB 250 ($7.60) in fees on every foreign-card ATM withdrawal. PromptPay QR works at street stalls and needs a local account. Accounts on a DTV are hit and miss. Reported success is about 20% at some Bangkok Bank branches and 15% at Kasikorn. CHECK Expat sources report those rates. No bank publishes them. Check how to open a Thai bank account before you assume you will have one.

Numbeo does not publish an all-in total. It puts one person at THB 23,896 ($726) a month before rent, on 1,237 entries from 194 contributors. Its centre one-bedroom ask is THB 22,943 ($697). Add the two and you get about THB 46,800 ($1,423). That sits between our two lower columns.
So our comfortable figure is the high one, by about THB 20,000 a month. CHECK Two lines explain nearly all of the gap. Our comfortable rent is THB 30,000, against ExpatDen's worked example of THB 15,000 and Numbeo's centre average of THB 22,943. And no other source budgets health insurance at all. We put THB 3,500 a month in.
Both answers are honest. Rent at THB 15,000 to 20,000 and carry no cover, and you land near THB 45,000. That is what the other sites measure. Take a one-bedroom five minutes from a train and insure yourself for a private hospital, and you land near ours. Pick which reader you are before you pick a number.
One more note on dates. Expatistan refused our request on 10 September 2026. Its figure above is the 8 September read. CHECK Search listings that week still showed its page headed July 2026 prices.
Every figure here is for one person. Expatistan puts a family of four at THB 104,208 a month ($3,167), read 8 September 2026, and Numbeo puts the same family at THB 87,432 ($2,657) before rent, on data of 24 August 2026. Children do not scale a budget by two.
