Best time of year to move to Singapore

Singapore has no bad season, only a bad window. Move between February and July, when the weather is uniform and the air is usually clean. Avoid August to October, when smoke from Indonesian fires can arrive. Central Singapore's 24-hour pollutant index hit 105 on 10 September 2026, inside the unhealthy band. December is the wettest month, at 331.9 mm.

Current at 9 September 2026. Dollars at SGD 1.27 to US$1, the rate of 8 September 2026.

One temperature, two risks, and no season to plan around

Nine other cities in this series have a month you should not arrive in. This one does not. It sits at 31 to 34 °C with about 80% humidity, every month (Singapore, honestly, September 2026). The Meteorological Service's 1991–2020 Changi record gives a daily maximum of 31 to 33 °C and 82% mean humidity.

Timing here is not a weather decision. It turns on the haze window and on how many flats are empty. Both matter more to moving to Singapore than the calendar does.

The year, and what each stretch is like to live through

Rain is the 1991–2020 monthly average at Changi Climate Station (Meteorological Service Singapore, read 10 September 2026).

PeriodRain a monthWhat it is like to live through
November–January222–332 mmThe wettest stretch. Heavy afternoon downpours most days, for weeks. Still 31 °C. Laundry stops drying.
February105 mmThe driest month. Best for viewing flats on foot.
March–July135–164 mmUniform. Hot, humid, sunny, with short storms. The default state of the city.
August–October125–168 mmThe haze window. Usually fine, occasionally not.
Every quarterThe electricity tariff resets. The October to December rate is announced at the end of September.

The book calls November to January the monsoon. The Meteorological Service dates the Northeast Monsoon from December to early March. CHECK The rainfall backs the book on the wettest months. The official season name runs later.

The tariff was 34.78 cents a kWh including tax, set for 1 July to 30 September 2026 (SP Group, read 10 September 2026). The book puts cooling inside three monthly budgets, with utilities at S$60, S$220 and S$350.

The haze window is the one thing to plan around

Fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan burn through the dry months. When the wind is wrong, the smoke reaches here, usually between August and October.

Singapore grades air on the Pollutant Standards Index. Good is 0 to 50, moderate 51 to 100, unhealthy 101 to 200 (National Environment Agency, read 10 September 2026). Most of the year the reading sits at 30 to 60 (Singapore, honestly, September 2026).

The window is open now. At 8am on 10 September 2026 the 24-hour index read 105 in central Singapore. The other four regions ran 76 to 86 (NEA data via data.gov.sg). Central 24-hour PM2.5 was 60 µg/m³. The book says the last severe episode was 2019, with milder spikes in 2023. CHECK The book was written on 8 September 2026. Two days later the central reading was in the unhealthy band, so use the live number.

NEA's haze portal, updated 17:31 on 9 September 2026, put stations in northwestern Borneo at unhealthy to hazardous. Singapore was not named.

Across a full year the number stays small. Singapore averaged 11.9 µg/m³ of PM2.5 in 2025, 84th of the countries measured (IQAir, read 10 September 2026). NEA's target was 12 µg/m³ a year by 2020, and 10 long term, which its page calls the WHO final standard. The WHO guideline is 5 µg/m³. CHECK NEA's label points at the 2005 guideline, and the WHO halved the figure in 2021.

Set against Chiang Mai in March, this is a footnote. It is still the only stretch worth avoiding.

No neighbourhood gets you out of the haze. On 10 September 2026 the whole island sat between 76 and 105 on the index. Choose your area on rent, transit and noise instead. The nine areas foreigners live in gives what each one costs and its honest drawback.

Nobody publishes a seasonal rent curve here, so sign on supply instead

There is no month-by-month rent pattern for this city. The book has none, the research file has none, and nothing found online gives one. What moves your rent is supply.

The figures come from the planning authority's release of 24 July 2026. Vacancy in completed private units is 6.4%, up from 6.2%. It runs 8.3% in the centre and 5.6% in the suburbs. Central rents rose 1.2% in the second quarter of 2026, while suburban rents fell 0.3%.

Then the pipeline. Only 1,611 private units completed in the first half of 2026, against about 5,000 due in the second. More keys in more hands is the closest thing to a cheap season here.

Three to eight per cent off asking is normal in the suburbs, zero to three in prime (Singapore, honestly, September 2026). Renting an apartment in Singapore covers the deposit, the 0.4% lease stamp duty and the agent fee.

One date matters. The relaxed occupancy cap of eight people lapses on 31 December 2026 unless it is extended. CHECK The research file could not confirm an extension. If you plan to share, ask before you sign.

Arrive in February, with the pass approved before January

One recommendation, committed to. Land in February. It is the driest month at 105 mm and it sits six months clear of the haze window. You spend your first weeks walking to viewings rather than sheltering from rain.

View and sign in the last quarter of the year if you can. That is when the 5,000 second-half completions reach the market, against vacancy of 6.4%.

A harder deadline sits in front of both. The Employment Pass salary floor for new applicants rises on 1 January 2027, from S$5,600 to S$6,000 a month. In financial services it goes from S$6,200 to S$6,600 (Ministry of Manpower, September 2026). If your offer is near the floor, the application has to land in 2026. Read the Employment Pass salary floors before you agree a start date.

Get the pass approved in 2026, view flats in the last quarter, move in February.
