Best time of year to move to Bangkok

Move to Bangkok in November or December. Both months are dry and cool for the tropics, about 25 to 32°C. November gets 48 mm of rain, December 10 mm (ICAO climate table, read 10 September 2026). Do not land between January and March. The city average for PM2.5 hit 58.1 µg/m³ in mid-January 2026, against a Thai limit of 37.5 (Eco-Business, 16 January 2026).

Two months are good and three are bad

The heat is not the thing. Bangkok's mean daily high moves 3.6°C all year. It runs 31.3°C in December and 34.9°C in April (ICAO climate table, read 10 September 2026). Humidity sits near 80% most of the year (Bangkok, honestly, September 2026). What changes is the rain and the air. That is the first thing to learn about moving to Bangkok.

November and December are the best of the year. January to March is when the air turns. March adds heat to the dust.

Rain and heat above are ICAO climate means for Bangkok, read 10 September 2026. A second series, the 1990–2020 average at weather-and-climate.com, puts September at 333 mm, not 344 mm. CHECK Neither names its station or its exact years. The shape of the year is agreed. The decimals are not.

The bad window is January to March, in micrograms

Thailand's 24-hour PM2.5 limit is 37.5 µg/m³. The World Health Organization sets 15 (Bangkok, honestly, September 2026). Bangkok sits above its own limit for much of January.

Bang Rak read 86.9 µg/m³ one mid-January morning and Sathorn 78.5, on a city average of 58.1 (Eco-Business, 16 January 2026). Two weeks later the city urged work from home on 29 and 30 January 2026 (The Thaiger, 28 January 2026).

The 2026 city plan calls 37.6 to 75.0 µg/m³ the "orange" band. Remote work turns mandatory once 35 districts, about 70% of the city, hit orange. Staff were told to work from home one day a week from January to March 2026 (Nation Thailand, 6 October 2025).

No current yearly average exists. IQAir's Bangkok page still shows 22.8 µg/m³ for 2019 (IQAir, read 10 September 2026). CHECK Daily readings back the book's window of December to April, worst from January to March. No 2026 figure exists to rank cities on.

Two costs ride with that window. A one-bedroom with the air on runs THB 2,000 to 2,200 a month ($61–67). From March to May it runs THB 3,000 to 5,000 ($91–152). An air purifier costs THB 3,000 to 7,000 ($91–213), and they sell out in January (Bangkok, honestly, September 2026). Buy one in November.

If you have asthma or any lung condition, this is the fact that decides it. Three months a year, every year. Plan to be elsewhere from January to March, or pick another city.

Rain floods streets, and not only in the wet months

September and October carry 344 and 242 mm. Water sits on low roads for hours, then drains.

The worst recent flood came outside that window. Before dawn on 13 November 2025, Pathum Wan took 111 mm of rain. Water closed 57 spots, Rama 4 and Khlong Toei among them (Nation Thailand, 13 November 2025). A dry month is no guarantee. Ask how your street drained last year, then read where foreigners live in Bangkok.

Nobody publishes a cheap month, so stop waiting for one

There is no seasonal rent index for Bangkok. No month makes a twelve-month lease cheaper, and no source claims one does.

Supply moves your rent instead. Portal asks are agent-inflated, and 5 to 15% off is normal. More comes off a twelve-month deal in an oversupplied mid tower (Expatden, 7 September 2026). The leverage sits in mid towers built from 2016 to 2022, in any month.

So sign when you know, not when it is cheap. Take a short lease, live through January to March, then commit for twelve months. Renting an apartment in Bangkok covers the deposit, the meter and the TM30.

One date this year beats the weather

The 60-day visa exemption ends on 15 September 2026. Sixty countries and territories drop to 30 days (TAT Newsroom, Royal Gazette notices of 31 August 2026). Thirty days will not cover viewings, a lease and a bank account.

Arrive in the first half of November

That is the call. You land in the driest, coolest stretch. You view flats in weather you can walk in. You buy the purifier before the shops empty. Your first January then arrives after you have a home and a routine.

Live through March before you decide anything. If April still suits you, the city will suit you for years. If it does not, you learn that on a three-month lease.
