Bangkok public transport

You do not need a car in Bangkok. Six rail systems, two boat networks and Grab cover almost every trip. A train ride costs THB 17–47 ($0.52–1.43) and a 3 km Grab runs THB 60–120 ($1.80–3.65), both September 2026. The road is the problem. Traffic averages 22 minutes 59 seconds per 10 km (TomTom traffic index, 2025 edition).

The best network in mainland Southeast Asia, and the worst traffic

Both are true. The trick is never needing the road. Traffic costs a driver about 115 hours a year (TomTom traffic index, 2025 edition).

So the fix is where you sleep. Get that right first when moving to Bangkok. A five-minute walk to a station costs about 30% more than a fifteen-minute walk. Where foreigners actually live in Bangkok sorts every area by its station.

What runs, and what it costs

The BTS is the one that annoys. It wants a Rabbit card, and your passport to sell you one. The book records no bank-card tap on the BTS in 2026. A rail guide dated April 2026 says tap now works at most stations. It puts the fare range at THB 17–65. CHECK Two live sources, two answers. The operator's own fare page was down for both. Buy a Rabbit card either way.

The THB 20 fare is dead and the THB 40 cap has an end date

The flat THB 20 fare is gone. Its all-lines version needed an app sign-up with a Thai ID. Foreigners were shut out anyway.

You get a THB 40 ($1.22) all-day cap instead. It covers the Red and Purple lines, for bank-card users. It began on 1 December 2025 and ends on 30 November 2026. An extension has been proposed (Nation Thailand, 2 June 2026). The book has the start date, not the end date.

A common fare of THB 17–45 ($0.52–1.37) on every line is promised for 2027 (Nation Thailand, 2 June 2026). Whether foreigners qualify has never been stated. CHECK The last scheme locked them out through its app. Assume nothing until the rule is published.

Ride-hailing is the default, and Bolt undercuts Grab

Grab is the app everyone has. Bolt is cheaper. inDrive, LINE MAN Taxi and Maxim all work.

A 3 km trip runs THB 60–120 ($1.80–3.65). Ten kilometres runs THB 150–300 ($4.56–9.12). Both come from Bangkok, honestly, September 2026. Two 2026 rideshare tests come in lower. Bolt quotes THB 120–150 for 10 km and Grab THB 140–180 (5 March 2026). CHECK No app publishes a tariff, so every figure here is observed. The book's top end covers surge and tolls.

The airport to Sukhumvit is THB 400–700 ($12.16–21.28) with tolls. GrabBike runs THB 25–50 ($0.76–1.52) under 3 km. From 30 September 2026 every app driver must hold a public driving licence (The Thaiger, 5 September 2026).

Taxis are cheaper, when the driver agrees to the meter

Flag fall is THB 35 ($1.06). Eight kilometres costs about THB 202 ($6.14) (Expatistan, read 8 September 2026). That beats Grab on the same trip.

The meter is the catch. Refusals are the top complaint against Bangkok taxis. They were 720 of 2,120 in 2023. One crackdown in May 2025 arrested 76 drivers. Avoid the yellow-green owner-driven cabs. Say your destination through the window. Watch the meter start. If the driver names a price, close the door.

Motorbike taxis in orange vests sit at every soi mouth. A soi run costs THB 15–60 ($0.46–1.82). They are the fastest thing in the city and the most dangerous. CHECK The Department of Land Transport sets these fares. Its table was unreachable on 8 September 2026. Read the board at the stand.

You probably do not need a licence, and you cannot easily get one

Thailand accepts an International Driving Permit, under the 1949 and 1968 conventions. A home licence alone works only for ASEAN nationals. An IDP holds for about 90 days from entry. Insurers push 60.

The class matters more than the paper. Ride a bike on a car-only licence and you count as unlicensed. Insurers then deny the claim. That goes for Por Ror Bor cover and for the voluntary kind (Thailand Starter Kit, 4 September 2026). Por Ror Bor costs THB 160–645 a year ($4.86–19.60). A Type 3+ scooter policy runs about THB 1,499 ($45.56). Neither pays if your licence is wrong.

The fines are small. The hospital bill is not. No helmet is THB 2,000 ($60.79), riding unlicensed THB 1,000 ($30.40), and not showing a licence THB 2,000 (The Thaiger, 1 July 2026). Checkpoints are rarer here than in Phuket. Sukhumvit and Ratchada still run them at night.

A Thai licence needs a residence certificate. That is the wall. Bangkok Immigration issues them only to foreigners who file 90-day reports. Visa-exempt and short-tourist arrivals get sent to their embassy. Most embassies stopped issuing them years ago. From 15 September 2026 the shorter visa exemption closes that door further.

DTV holders who file a TM30 and a 90-day report have been getting certificates and two-year licences. No official statement says they qualify. A 2026 visa guide says some offices still refuse them. CHECK The evidence is expat reporting and one provincial rule, not a national policy. Read the Thai driver's licence rules first.

A two-year car licence is THB 205 ($6.23), a bike THB 105 ($3.19). The licence chapter in Bangkok, honestly names the four documents, the DLT office expats use, and the two tests a foreign licence does not waive.

Owning a car costs far more than the car

A non-ASEAN car carries an 80% import tariff, plus excise. That puts a European car at two to three times its home price. A Thai-built car starts near THB 550,000 ($16,720). First-class insurance runs about THB 13,000 a year ($395).

Then fuel. Gasohol 95 was THB 38.29 a litre ($1.16) on 1–2 September 2026 (Bangchak). Parking is the next line. Condo ratios run from 54% of units to 236% (FazWaz, read 8 September 2026). Under 100% means a wait for a space.

Renting beats owning for almost everyone. A scooter costs THB 150–350 a day ($4.56–10.64), or THB 2,000–4,000 a month ($60.79–121.58). A car starts near THB 1,200 a day ($36.47) (The Thaiger, 1 July 2026).

Walkability is a district answer, and mostly the answer is no

Bangkok is not a walking city. It has three exceptions. The skywalk from Siam to Phloen Chit is the best walking stretch in Thailand. You cross malls and stations without touching a road. Asok has a shorter one. Silom and Sathorn walk well inside the office core on a weekday.

Everywhere else the pavement is broken, narrow, and shared with motorbikes riding on it. Add 34°C in April and a fifteen-minute walk needs a change of shirt. Cycling works in Lumphini Park, Benjakitti Park and Bang Krachao, not on the road.
