Chiang Mai burning season, honestly

The 2026 season ran about eight weeks, from roughly 1 March to 22 April. On 5 April 2026 Chiang Mai's air hit AQI 206, PM2.5 131 µg/m³, 3.5 times Thailand's 24-hour limit (The Thaiger, 5 April 2026). On 10 September 2026 the same city read 6 µg/m³, and that is ordinary. Plan for the eight weeks.

Getting the arrival month wrong can cost THB 200,000

The mistake in moving to Chiang Mai is arriving in November, loving it, and signing a twelve-month lease in December. A THB 25,000 flat needs two months deposit plus one month advance upfront, THB 75,000 ($2,280) (Chiang Mai, honestly, September 2026).

Break that lease in March and you forfeit the deposit, THB 50,000 ($1,520). Fail to sublet the other eight months and it reaches THB 200,000 ($6,079).

A one-month deposit cap has applied since September 2025, but only to landlords with three or more units. Single-unit owners are exempt (thethaiger.com, 11 August 2026).

Visa-free stays for most Western passports drop from 60 days to 30 on 15 September 2026 (Royal Gazette, 31 August 2026). One extension of up to 30 days costs THB 1,900 ($58), for 60 days total. CHECK Reported by thethaiger.com alone; the TAT notice does not confirm it (6 September 2026). A January-to-April trial now needs the DTV route.

CHECK The season's length has nine weeks of spread. The book says February to April, chiangmaidoctor.com mid-January to mid-April, IQAir January to April, and the provincial ban 1 February to 31 May. Bad means three things: the ban, the hotspots, days over the standard. Expat accounts calling February 2026 clear are anecdote.

Six true peak readings for 2026, and they differ by a factor of six

Every figure published about the season is correct; none measures the same thing. They differ by averaging period, station and scale — a reading without its fourth column is unusable (air4thai.pcd.go.th, Pollution Control Department daily tables, read 11 September 2026).

808 µg/m³ is 21.5 times the Thai limit and 53.9 times the WHO one. The 5 April reading is 3.5 and 8.7 times.

The Ministry of Interior's permanent secretary declared Chiang Mai, Lamphun and Phayao emergency disaster zones over air quality on Saturday 4 April 2026. The Thaiger's account, published the next day, carries the 5 April date most sources repeat (thethaiger.com, 5 April 2026; en.wikipedia.org, read 11 September 2026). IQAir ranked Chiang Mai the world's most polluted city for five days running that week (thethaiger.com, 5 April 2026).

The rest of the year is clean by Thailand's standard and not by the WHO's

Chiang Mai's annual mean was 26.4 µg/m³ in 2024 and 18.2 in 2025 (iqair.com, read 10 September 2026). That is 3.6 times the WHO annual guideline of 5 µg/m³ for 2025, and 5.3 times for 2024, both over Thailand's 15 µg/m³ standard. PCD's own station network shows the same fall, from 27.6–30.3 µg/m³ in 2024 to 17.1–22.8 in 2025 (air4thai.pcd.go.th, station tables, read 11 September 2026).

Across eight northern provinces, 2013 to 2022, the haze-season mean was 42.91 µg/m³ against a non-haze mean of 12.14 (PMC11125922, read 10 September 2026) — inside Thailand's annual standard, but 2.4 times the WHO one.

Getting worse? On peaks, up and down: 2024 was worst, 2025 improved, and 2026 sat between them (air4thai.pcd.go.th station tables, read 11 September 2026). On annual means no, because 26.4 fell to 18.2. You live through the peak.

Nobody can date the end. Thailand logged 2,358 hotspots on 19 April 2026 against Myanmar's 1,536, Laos's 775 and Vietnam's 578 (Nation Thailand, 20 April 2026). 1,419 sat in conservation forest, 158 on farmland — a ban reaches neither.

The clean months carry their own bill. September and October give the best air and the Ping flood watch together, after the river's record 4.93 m in September 2024 (The Thaiger, 26 September 2024).

Asthma, COPD, a heart condition or a young child rules you out

• Asthma or COPD. Across eight northern provinces, 2013 to 2022, COPD re-admissions tracked PM2.5 at a one-month lag and ran 4.23 per 1,000 cases higher in haze season (PMC11125922)
• A heart condition. Chiang Mai University's medical faculty puts mortality up 1.6% over six days per 10 µg/m³ of daily PM2.5 (Bangkok Post). CHECK The page was paywalled; figure from the search result
• A young child, or a pregnant woman. Both are named raised-risk in 2026 warnings (openthemagazine.com). Schools sit in the Hang Dong–Mae Hia belt, the drive breathes smoke, and the escape months are term time
• Women, and anyone under 65. Among 5,465 lung-cancer patients across 103 districts, adenocarcinoma incidence rose 2.2% per 10 µg/m³ — female adjusted IRR 1.126, under-65 IRR 1.105 (Frontiers in Public Health, 16 June 2026)
• Anyone who cannot leave. A fixed job, a school year or a lease you cannot sublet puts that cost back on the table

All findings above read 10 September 2026. Incidence rose in that study; the decadal paper found no significant seasonal link to lung-cancer fatality (p = 0.296, PMC11125922).

Get your insurance exclusions in writing first. No source states how insurers treat pre-existing asthma or COPD, and private hospitals ask THB 50,000–200,000 ($1,520–6,079) before planned treatment (thethaiger.com, 24 April 2026). April 2026 brought severe lung cases across the north, including a 19-year-old tourist (thethaiger.com, 19 April 2026).

It does not rule out a healthy adult with portable work, no children and a 180-day visa. Nine months at $1,584 a month plus a Da Nang quarter is this series' cheapest good year.

Leaving is the only response that works, and it costs $1,001 a year

1. Leave for the season. Twelve months at the book's comfortable budget is THB 625,200 ($19,003). Three months in Da Nang, lease kept, adds THB 32,919 ($1,001). Phuket adds THB 141,300 ($4,295). Bangkok, Hanoi and Phnom Penh are not escapes
2. Seal the room you sleep in. Two filtered bedrooms (The Sqair, THB 3,990, wedo-air.com, 8 January 2026) cost THB 13,100 ($398) in year one, THB 5,120 ($156) after. CHECK That vendor prices its own machines; the Bangkok Post's THB 9,000 Xiaomi figure was paywalled. Filter life drops to three or four months (electrothailand.com, 13 April 2026). Buy before February: purifiers sell out at the season's peak
