Koh Samui public transport

Koh Samui has no bus, no train and no commuter ferry. You need your own wheels. A scooter rents for THB 2,500–4,000 a month ($76–122) as of April 2026, and a used one costs THB 25,000–45,000 ($760–1,368). Songthaews run in daylight and thin out after dark. Taxis rarely use meters, so agree the fare first.

The island has one road and no timetable

Route 4169 rings Koh Samui for 51 kilometres, with a spur out to Choeng Mon. Everything you do after moving to Koh Samui happens on that road. There is no rail, no metro, no scheduled bus and no commuter ferry. That is the whole picture. It does not improve after dark.

The nearest thing to a bus is the songthaew, a converted pickup with bench seats. Yellow trucks run clockwise and red ones anticlockwise. They work daylight hours and frequency drops sharply after dark. There is no fixed fare list and no published timetable. The driver prices by route, time, load and how new you look.

A 3 km airport run costs THB 180–250 on Grab

Grab works island-wide through the app, with pinned pickup and an official Samui Airport transfer. Coverage is good in Chaweng, Bophut and around the airport, and thinner elsewhere. Bolt is named as an app locals use, and inDriver appears in 2026 island guides. One October 2025 guide says flatly that Grab and Bolt do not work reliably here, against newer 2026 sources and Grab's own Samui page. CHECK

The airport transfer is the one Grab price anyone publishes: THB 180–250 fixed ($5.47–7.60) for the 3 km from Chaweng (grab.com Samui airport rides; insidesamui.com, 15 June 2026). A songthaew driver quotes a tourist THB 200–400 for the same ride.

Ten kilometres is where the data runs out. No operator publishes a per-kilometre tariff for Koh Samui, so a Chaweng-to-Bophut fare cannot be quoted honestly. CHECK The nearest published prices are fixed private transfers from the airport: THB 300–450 to Bophut and THB 400–600 to Chaweng (ridesamui.com, 2026). The songthaew fair target for that same 10 km is THB 60–80.

Taxis are metered by law and metered almost never

Samui taxis are yellow or maroon saloons with a yellow-and-green roof sign. They seldom run the meter, though the meter is a legal requirement. The district said so plainly after a May 2026 crackdown, and threatened licence suspensions and plate revocations.

What triggered that crackdown was not a fare dispute. A taxi driver was shot dead in late May 2026, in a killing police linked to a local gang. On 28 May 2026 authorities moved against taxi queue groups accused of blocking rivals (thaiexaminer.com, 29 May 2026).

You need a licence, and the wrong one voids your insurance

Thailand recognises the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions. A home licence plus a matching International Driving Permit works for a visitor. The IDP must carry the motorcycle category. A car-only IDP does not cover a 125cc scooter, and police and insurers will both treat you as unlicensed.

That is where the money is. A rental scooter carries only compulsory cover. It pays THB 30,000 to 80,000 of medical costs ($912–2,432) and nothing else. No insurer covers damage to the rental scooter itself. Travel policies routinely void a claim if you were riding without a licence valid for that class. Riding unlicensed is a THB 500–1,000 fine ($15–30) with the bike impounded, and no helmet is THB 2,000 ($61). The fines are small. The hospital bill is not.

A Thai licence reportedly takes two days here, at about THB 330 of government fees for car and motorcycle together. That comes from one undated guide and nothing corroborates it. CHECK Who qualifies matters more. The national rule wants a non-immigrant visa, a work permit or permanent residence, and excludes tourist entries. No source states which categories the Samui office accepts, and Thailand DTV visa holders are a documented grey area nationwide. Koh Samui, honestly walks that route in order: certificate of residence, medical certificate at about THB 250 ($7.60), traffic course, then the office.

Buying a scooter beats renting one after eleven months

A scooter rents for THB 150–350 a day ($4.56–10.64), or THB 2,500–4,000 a month long term. A second-hand one costs THB 25,000–45,000 (insidesamui.com, April 2026). Take the middle of both ranges and buying pays for itself in about eleven months. An economy car is roughly THB 1,000 a day ($30), or THB 12,000–20,000 a month ($365–608).

Gasohol 95 was THB 38.29 a litre ($1.16) on 2 September 2026 (nationthailand.com). Numbeo's Samui pump figure of THB 47.64 sits 24% higher, with no explanation. CHECK

Two places here are walkable, and the rest are not

Fisherman's Village in Bophut is the island's most walkable retail and dining strip. Chaweng is the only area that behaves like a town, with four kilometres of beach, the only mall and both cinemas. Maenam has the flat ground, rare on a hilly island. Everywhere else you drive. Choeng Mon has few independent restaurants, so dinner is a drive on unlit roads.

The ring road is fast, narrow in places and unlit outside the towns. The hillside spurs are steep, and wet for a quarter of the year. Your area decides how much of that you ride, so read where people actually live on Samui beside this page.

Getting off the island is the cost that never goes away

Bangkok Airways built Samui Airport, owns it, and flies the only nonstop from Bangkok. One way runs THB 2,795–8,000 ($85–243). The cheaper route is Surat Thani from about THB 1,000 ($30), then a van and a ferry at THB 80–200 ($2.43–6.08). Vietjet has sold that as one booking since 28 April 2026, from THB 1,100 ($33).
