Chiang Mai public transport

You need a scooter. Chiang Mai has no train, and none is due before 2032. Red songthaews are capped at THB 30 a ride ($0.91). Only about 100 of the 1,000 red trucks still work (The Thaiger, 14 May 2024). A 10 km Grab ride runs about THB 225 ($6.84), September 2026 (Numbeo, read 10 September 2026).

Everyone moving to Chiang Mai asks about the tram. It will not affect your first lease.

Bidding is set for 2027. Building starts in 2028, and the target to open is 2032 (The Thaiger, 25 March 2026). Thairath English put the first line at 5 km, Mae Hia to Ratchaphruek, in April 2026 (read 10 September 2026). The book carries the 2032 date, not the 5 km line. CHECK

The old system is shrinking. Of 1,000 registered red songthaews, about 100 still work (The Thaiger, 14 May 2024). Grab took the rest.

So you measure an address in scooter minutes, not in stops.

What actually moves you, and what it costs

The bus fare has moved. The book carries a flat THB 20 from the 2023 relaunch. Guides read on 10 September 2026 quote THB 20–30, and one quotes a flat THB 30. CHECK Budget THB 30 and be glad when it is less.

Grab is the real network, and it is cheap

Three apps run here. Grab is the biggest and Bolt is usually cheapest. InDrive lets you name a price (The Thaiger, 4 September 2024).

Numbeo's tariff, read 10 September 2026, is THB 40 plus THB 18.50 a km. So 3 km costs about THB 95 ($2.89), and 10 km about THB 225 ($6.84).

Real quotes sit lower. A guide of 12 May 2026 puts the Old City to Nimman at THB 60–90 ($1.82–2.74) by GrabCar. The airport to the Old City is THB 80–180 ($2.43–5.47). GrabBike is THB 50–120 ($1.52–3.65).

Only Grab may pick you up at the airport terminal (The Thaiger, 21 May 2024).

No metered taxis, and the red trucks set the price

Chiang Mai never built a meter-taxi trade. The red songthaew is the shared taxi here, and you agree the price first.

That talk goes badly for foreigners. THB 30 is the cap. THB 100 is what gets quoted at Tha Phae Gate after dark (The Thaiger, 13 May 2024). Tuk-tuk mark-ups of 200–300% are reported at the same spots (Byklo, 12 May 2026).

The defence is the app. A Grab fare is fixed before you accept it. Say your number out loud before you climb into a red truck.

You need a Thai licence, and your insurance turns on it

If you ride, yes.

A foreign licence with an International Driving Permit covers you at first. The book says one year from entry. A Chiang Mai licence guide of May 2026 says 90 days, after which you ride unlicensed. That gap is nine months. CHECK Work to the 90-day figure.

Getting it wrong costs money. Without a valid permit or a Thai driving licence, insurers may refuse a claim flat. Read your own policy wording too. Many rule out motorbike injury unless you hold the right licence class.

Riding on an expired licence carries a fine of up to THB 2,000 ($61). The on-the-spot fine for the wrong class runs THB 500–1,000 ($15–30) (Byklo, 12 May 2026). Checkpoints on the moat run several times a week in high season.

Weigh the claim, not the fine. Thailand had 17,447 road deaths in 2024, and 14,144 of them were riders. Of riders taken to hospital, 84% wore no helmet (The Thaiger, 5 January 2026).

The licence itself is cheap. Fees are THB 205 ($6.20) for the two-year temporary and THB 505 ($15.35) for the five-year renewal. All in, about THB 1,000 ($30).

The hard part is the residence certificate, at THB 500 ($15.20) and valid 30 days. Chiang Mai Immigration issues it mainly to long-stay visa holders. Tourists usually cannot get one. The book records DTV holders as unconfirmed. Licence services read on 10 September 2026 list the DTV as accepted, but warn it is harder without a long-stay visa. CHECK

A scooter is THB 2,500 a month, a car is a salary

Renting a scooter runs THB 2,000–3,500 a month ($61–106) (The Thaiger, 11 August 2026). A guide of 12 May 2026 puts the top at THB 4,000 ($122) and daily hire at THB 150–300 ($4.56–9.12).

Fuel is contested. Numbeo says THB 47.92 a litre, read 10 September 2026. Expatistan said THB 35 on 31 August 2026. Neither one settles the other, and the gap is 37%. CHECK

Buying is the costly door. A new Toyota Corolla 1.6 lists at THB 894,000 ($27,170) on Numbeo, read 10 September 2026. Tax, insurance and parking sit on top.

The book budgets THB 2,500 ($76) a month for transport at the basic tier and THB 4,000 ($122) at the comfortable one. Both assume a scooter. The top tier is THB 12,000 ($365), which is a car plus a daily Grab habit (Chiang Mai, honestly, 8 September 2026).

Only two districts are walkable

Nimman and the Old City. That is the whole list.

Nimman is cafés, coworking desks and condos in a grid you can cross on foot. The Old City is low-rise, flat and walled, and you can walk across it in twenty minutes.

Everywhere else costs you a vehicle. Santitham and San Sai are a scooter. Hang Dong and Mae Rim are a car, because the songthaew network barely reaches them. The seven areas foreigners actually live in sort almost entirely on that.

Walking is seasonal too. From February to April the valley traps smoke. On 5 April 2026 the index hit 206 and PM2.5 reached 131 µg/m³, against a Thai 24-hour limit of 37.5 (The Thaiger, 5 April 2026). Those are not walking months, or riding months.

Rush hour jams Huay Kaew Road, the Superhighway and Nimman. No world traffic index covers Chiang Mai, so every claim about its jams is anecdote, that one included.
