Cost of living in Ho Chi Minh City
A comfortable single life in Ho Chi Minh City costs VND 45.5M a month, about $1,750, rent included. A basic version runs VND 18.4M ($708) and a luxury one VND 99.2M ($3,815). Rent is 48% of the comfortable figure. All figures are September 2026, converted at VND 26,000 to US$1.

Food is the cheapest line here, and the city average is the trap
Eating is the best value in the region. A local lunch costs VND 55,000 ($2.12). The same lunch in a business district costs VND 156,000 ($6.00) (Numbeo, read 10 September 2026; Expatistan, read 8 September 2026). Street food and corner-shop groceries feed one person on VND 5M ($192) a month.
Rent is where the published numbers break. On 1 July 2025 Vietnam abolished districts and absorbed Binh Duong and Ba Ria–Vung Tau into the city. Anyone moving to Ho Chi Minh City now reads a "city average" that mixes two markets. It blends a 107M VND per square metre core with a former Binh Duong near 60M (Knight Frank via VnExpress, 5 April 2026).
The rental data has the same fault. The market-wide asking rent on nhatot.com is VND 6.7M ($258) across 29,623 listings, up 3.1% on the year (8 September 2026). Nothing in the core rents for that. Budget at ward level.

What is expensive: imports, alcohol and the meter
Imported dairy. Imported cheddar runs 90,000–130,000 VND per 200 g ($3.46–5.00). CHECK That range is shelf observation, not a published price list. Local cheese is about 63,000 VND for 200 g ($2.42), per Numbeo on 10 September 2026.
Imported coffee. 150,000–250,000 VND per 250 g ($5.77–9.62), against local robusta at 60,000–90,000 ($2.31–3.46). CHECK Neither range was confirmed from a retailer page.
Electricity, when the landlord holds the meter. EVN's average retail price is 2,204.07 VND per kWh ($0.085) before VAT. Serviced flats and many landlords bill a flat 3,500–4,000 VND instead ($0.135–0.154). Daily air conditioning uses 300–450 kWh a month. That is 900,000–1.6M VND ($35–62) on EVN blocks, or 1.05M–1.8M ($40–69) at a landlord rate. EVN's tariff page still lists Decision 1279/QD-BCT of 9 May 2025 as current, read 10 September 2026, so nothing moved after the book's July 2026 check.
Wine, spirits and cars. Alcohol carries special consumption tax on top of import duty. A Toyota Corolla Cross runs roughly VND 800–900M ($30,769–34,615). CHECK Vietnamese dealer list prices load by script and were not retrieved.
What is cheap: everything a local already buys
- Coffee. A street cà phê sữa đá is 15,000–25,000 VND ($0.58–0.96), a third of a chain cappuccino
- Beer. 15,000–25,000 a glass in a quán ($0.58–0.96). A 500 ml shop bottle is 23,500–27,400 ($0.90–1.05)
- Motorbike taxis. A 3 km GrabBike is about 18,000–25,000 VND ($0.69–0.96); 10 km is 45,000–60,000 ($1.73–2.31)
- Help at home. A cleaner is roughly 60,000–80,000 VND an hour ($2.31–3.08)
Three of those are observed practice rather than published tariffs: the street coffee, the cleaner's hourly rate and the GrabBike fares. CHECK
What people get wrong: they optimise the cheap lines
Food is 22% of the comfortable budget. Rent is 48%, a higher share than Bangkok's. Halving your grocery bill saves VND 5M ($192) a month, and it makes your week worse. Moving from a Thao Dien one-bedroom at VND 23.4M–31.2M ($900–1,200) to a Phu Nhuan serviced studio at 9.1M–15.6M ($350–600) saves VND 8M–22M ($308–846). That is more than every other economy on the table combined.
Budget for the payment system, not only the prices. VietQR bank-app payment is universal here, down to street stalls. A Vietnamese bank account needs a work permit, a residence card valid at least twelve months, or an investor visa. Without one you run on cash and a foreign card, and wet markets are cash regardless. Where Numbeo and Expatistan disagree with us
Numbeo, read 10 September 2026, puts a single person's costs without rent at VND 12.84M ($494), and a centre one-bedroom at 14.95M ($575). Add them and a month is VND 27.79M ($1,069), which is 39% below our comfortable total. That total was paywalled when the book was researched on 8 September 2026.
Most of the gap is two lines. Numbeo has no health insurance and thinner leisure. Ours carries VND 2.5M and VND 6M for those ($96 and $231). CHECK Numbeo's weighting is not visible to us, so read the 39% as scope, not contradiction.
Numbeo reads utilities for an 85 m² flat at VND 2.69M ($104). Our comfortable line is 2M ($77), Expatistan 2.07M ($80). Ours assumes a smaller flat.
Expatistan, read 8 September 2026, puts a normal 45 m² studio at VND 8.1M ($312) and a normal furnished 85 m² flat at 16.8M ($646). The studio matches our basic rent line of 8M. CHECK Expatistan refused an automated read on 10 September 2026 with HTTP 403, so its numbers here are two days older than the rest of this page.
