Hua Hin public transport

You need your own wheels unless you live in central Hua Hin. One green songthaew route is the whole public transport system. It runs 12.5 km along Phetkasem Road at THB 15 ($0.46) a leg, 06:00 to 21:00 on weekdays, as at September 2026. Grab and Bolt cover the town core.

One songthaew route decides whether this town works for you

One bus-equivalent service, on one road, and no rail transit in the district. Anyone moving to Hua Hin lands on one side of that. Over 50 and driving? Access beats Phuket and Koh Samui, with Bangkok three hours away. Under 50, or carless? Your address list shrinks to the town core.

The green songthaew is the entire network, and it stops at 21:00

One route, 12.5 km, from Khao Takiab along Phetkasem Road to Nong Kae. Northern and southern legs meet at the night market. The fare is THB 15 ($0.46) a leg, every 15 minutes, up to 20 in low season. Hours are 06:00 to 21:00 Monday to Thursday, and to 22:00 at weekends (thailandawaits.com, updated 2 June 2026).

CHECK Two sources give a flat fare instead: THB 10–20 (baanlyy.com, 7 July 2026) and a flat THB 10 (Wikivoyage, read 10 September 2026). Carry small notes and expect the driver's number.

No city bus, no metro, no commuter train.

Bangkok is 195 to 200 km by road, at THB 180–400 ($5.47–12.16) by bus or minivan. Third class on the train starts at THB 44 ($1.34), from an elevated station opened on 11 December 2023.

The airport carried 63,230 passengers in 2025 on four domestic routes, and flies nowhere international.

Grab and Bolt work, and a 3 km hop costs about THB 60

Both apps run citywide, with three to five minute pickups centrally.

A 3 km trip inside town costs about THB 60 ($1.82). Khao Takiab to Bluport mall runs THB 60–80 ($1.82–2.43). A 10 km run, the town centre out to Black Mountain golf course, sits near the top of the band at THB 150–200 ($4.56–6.08).

Coverage thins outside the core. In Hin Lek Fai, Thap Tai or Cha-Am you wait, or you drive.

Tuk-tuks have no meters, and nobody pretends otherwise

Meter refusal is not the complaint here, because meters are barely present. Street taxis are uncommon. Tuk-tuks are unmetered and among Thailand's most expensive, about THB 150 ($4.56) from Tamarind Market to the night market. Wikivoyage puts the floor at THB 100 over any distance for a foreign passenger (read 10 September 2026). Agree the fare first.

You need a Thai licence, and the wrong document voids your insurance

A foreign licence alone is not valid for non-ASEAN nationals. Thailand recognises International Driving Permits under the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions. Treat an IDP as good for roughly 90 days from entry.

Your IDP must carry the motorcycle category. A car-only IDP leaves you unlicensed on a scooter, to police and to insurers both.

The local licence office is used to retirement-visa applicants, and the 50-question English written test is available. CHECK That comes from a commercial licence service's own page, read 9 September 2026, uncorroborated.

Holders of the annual Thai retirement extension are in the strongest position. A TM30 and 90-day reports make the required residence certificate straightforward. CHECK Whether that office accepts a DTV holder could not be established from any source. Chonburi published a rule in July 2025 admitting DTV and tourist-visa holders to two-year licences. This province has published nothing.

One date bites. From 15 September 2026 the 30-day visa exemption removes a visa-exempt visitor's last route to a residence certificate.

Local enforcement statistics do not exist here, unlike Phuket. National fines are small: THB 2,000 per person ($61) for no helmet, and THB 500–1,000 for no licence with the bike impounded.

A car costs THB 12,000–18,000 a month before fuel

Most foreign residents rent rather than buy, so rentals are the honest measure.

• Scooter: THB 200–300 a day ($6.08–9.12), or THB 2,500–4,000 a month ($76–122) for a 110–160 cc automatic. CHECK Wikivoyage gives THB 150–200 a day and calls it seasonal (read 10 September 2026).

Only central Hua Hin works on foot

Both malls, both private hospitals, the immigration desk at Bluport and the beach are walkable from the centre (thailandstarterkit.com, 14 August 2026). Nowhere else in the district is.

The structural problem is Highway 4. It runs through the middle of town rather than around it, so all Bangkok-to-south traffic passes through. A THB 7 billion widening to six lanes has a 2026 target (The Thaiger, 17 April 2025). CHECK Hua Hin appears in no TomTom or INRIX congestion ranking, so no comparative traffic figure exists.

Four of the seven areas foreigners live in are car-dependent by design. That is why choosing an area in Hua Hin and choosing a vehicle are one decision. Plan on no high-speed rail either. The 2032 Bangkok line has nothing under construction.

If a car is the deciding factor

A licence and a vehicle are not optional unless you take a town-centre address, one narrow band of one small town. If that trade is not yours, compare the ten cities.
