Cost of living in Koh Samui
One person lives on Koh Samui for THB 28,500 a month ($866) at the basic level, THB 77,600 ($2,359) comfortably, and THB 207,000 ($6,292) at the top. Those totals are September 2026, converted at THB 32.9 to the dollar, and every one of them includes rent. The island runs 15 to 25% above mainland Thailand on almost everything.
Everything here arrives by boat, and the price says so
That 15 to 25% premium on food, services and accommodation is the first number to understand about moving to Koh Samui (insidesamui.com, updated April 2026). It rides on groceries, cars, furniture and building materials, because all of it crosses on a ferry. A 2026 fuel shock had already lifted Thai contractor quotes about 20% nationally (edgeprop.sg, June 2026). The premium is already inside the budget below.

Basic buys an inland studio in Nathon, Maenam or Lamai, plus a scooter. Comfortable buys a one-bedroom apartment, or a two-bedroom pool villa in Bophut, Maenam or Lamai. Luxury buys a three-bedroom sea-view pool villa. Transport is high because you cannot walk anywhere here, and the two insurance figures are estimates rather than quoted premiums. CHECK

Five everyday items are missing from the Samui dataset: tomatoes, bottled water, shop-bought beer, imported cheddar and ground coffee. CHECK Groceries for one person run THB 4,000 to 8,000 a month ($122–243). The average local net salary is THB 13,132 ($399), same dataset.
Four things cost real money here, and three of them are structural
Leaving the island. A couple flying Bangkok Airways to Bangkok and back pays THB 11,000 to 32,000 ($334–973). Via Surat Thani it is THB 4,400 to 10,000 ($134–304), plus a day each way. Bangkok Airways built the airport, owns it, and flies the only nonstop.
Imported food. Beef is THB 372 a kilo ($11.31) and a mid-range bottle of wine THB 500 ($15.20), on the July 2026 basket. Imported cheddar has no Samui data point. Expect THB 250 to 400 for 200 g at Tops. CHECK
Fuel and wheels. Numbeo puts Samui petrol at THB 47.64 a litre. The national gasohol 95 price was THB 39.09 on 10 September 2026 (motorist.co.th). Numbeo's island figure sits 22% above the pump, and no source explains the gap. CHECK
Power and water. A villa with air conditioning and a pool pump runs THB 5,000 to 10,000 a month ($152–304), re-billed by landlords at 4 to 8 baht a unit. From 1 September 2026 the household tariff caps the first 200 units at THB 3.00 and charges 201 to 400 units at THB 4.1584 (nationthailand.com, 12 August 2026). That is newer than our book's 4-to-8 range of 9 September 2026, and it is the government rate, not the landlord's. The same report gives the new average as 3.86 in one place and about 3.89 in another. CHECK Tap water is not drinkable, and the island has rationed supply since 3 August 2026, producing about 16,000 m³ a day against demand near 34,000. Households were buying trucked water at THB 250 to 300 per 2,000 litres in July 2023, the most recent published price we could find. CHECK
Local food, local rent and everyday services stay genuinely cheap
A local lunch is THB 150 ($4.56) and street food runs THB 50 to 100. A room in Nathon, Maenam village or the Lamai back streets is THB 4,000 to 7,000 ($122–213). A studio is THB 7,000 to 12,000 ($213–365), September 2026.
Services barely move the budget. Internet is THB 577 a month ($17.54), a gym THB 1,350 ($41.03) and a cinema ticket THB 200 ($6.08), all July 2026 Numbeo. Basic utilities on an 85 m² apartment come to THB 2,717 ($82.57), a fraction of the villa figure above.
Where you shop moves the food line more than what you eat
Tops Market at Central Festival handles imports and holds the island's cheese and wine counter. Makro is the cheapest per unit, and it is where the restaurants shop. Lotus's and Big C cover the middle. The local markets at Bophut, Maenam and Nathon are cheaper again, and Hua Thanon sells the day's catch. There is no Villa Market and no Rimping branch here, on a store guide of October 2024 that has not been re-verified since. CHECK
Grab and LINE MAN both deliver. PromptPay QR works almost everywhere, market stalls included, and songthaews still want cash.
Two mistakes wreck a Samui budget, and both are local
The first is the word "monthly". A holiday monthly rate is the nightly rate times about twenty-five. A six or twelve-month lease runs 30 to 60% below it. The same three-bedroom pool villa is THB 250,000 a month as a holiday let and THB 40,000 to 90,000 on a twelve-month lease ($1,216–2,736). Budget from the wrong one and you overstate rent threefold, so start with how a long-stay lease is signed here.
The second is the mainland. Visa runs, specialist medicine, Bumrungrad, shopping and family visits all mean a flight or a ferry.
Budget four to six mainland trips a year. At THB 11,000 to 32,000 a return by air, that is a five-figure baht line no cost-of-living page shows you. Your visa route changes how often you make the trip, which is covered on the Thailand DTV visa page.
The cross-checks, and where they disagree with us
Numbeo puts a one-bedroom in the centre at THB 27,589.92 ($839) and outside it at THB 13,975 ($425), read 10 September 2026 on 3 July 2026 data. Our basic rent line is a third of that centre figure. Both can be true. Numbeo's 38 contributors skew foreign, and THB 9,000 stock is local Thai housing that never reaches a portal. The same sample puts a three-bedroom at THB 60,000 in the centre ($1,824) and THB 45,900 outside it ($1,395), which is a foreign villa price rather than a local one.
Nomads.com, read and updated 10 September 2026, gives a nomad $1,548, an expat $1,602, a local $969 and a family $3,391. Our book quoted $1,549, $1,603 and $3,393 on 9 September 2026, so those agree within rounding.
Inside Samui, updated April 2026, gives budget THB 30,000 to 35,000, comfortable THB 55,000 to 65,000 and luxury THB 100,000-plus. Our comfortable tier sits about THB 13,000 higher, deliberately. We price a real two-bedroom pool villa and the island's real transport cost.
