Best time of year to move to Bali

Arrive in November and rent by the month. Bali's wet season runs November to March, and living through it is the only real test of whether you want the island. January is the worst month, at 388.4 mm of rain over 18.8 wet days in Denpasar's 1991–2020 normals. April to June is the best. Sign a year in February.

Come in the wet season, not the dry one

Most advice on moving to Bali says land in the dry season. That is holiday advice. Six dry weeks in May tell you nothing about a house you have paid twelve months for.

The wet season is where the decision gets made. You find out whether your road floods, how rain from two until five for weeks suits you, and whether you can still work. Come in November, rent by the month. If you still want it in February, you want it for real.

The year, as a resident sees it

Rain, temperature and sunshine are 1991–2020 normals for Ngurah Rai airport, Denpasar, published by Starlings Roost Weather and read on 10 September 2026. They describe the south coast. Ubud rains more.

January is the bad window, and it carries 22% of the year's rain

Bali gets 1,742.2 mm of rain a year over 107.6 wet days. January alone brings 388.4 mm, which is 22% of the annual total in one month. February follows at 298.7 mm and 84% humidity, on FAO normals for 1961 to 1990, the newest this station has.

The lived version is worse than the average implies. The 2025 monsoon flooded Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and parts of Uluwatu. Water passed one metre in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Sanur in late February 2026 (The Bali Sun, 27 February 2026). Road collapses closed routes near Ubud that March.

CHECK Both of the last two wet seasons flooded harder than a 1991–2020 normal suggests. No agency publishes a flood-depth series for Bali, so nobody can say whether that is a trend or two bad years.

August to October is when the air turns, and nobody measures it properly

Air here is clean next to Chiang Mai or Hanoi. The exception is agricultural smoke, from August to October.

On the morning of 10 September 2026, IQAir's Bali stations read 159 in Tabanan, 157 in Badung, 155 in Seminyak town and 152 in Ubud. Denpasar read 95, with PM2.5 at 32.5 µg/m³. That is 6.5 times the WHO annual guideline of 5 µg/m³. Indonesia averaged 30.0 µg/m³ nationally across 2025, the seventeenth worst figure in the world (IQAir).

CHECK Those are US AQI values from about 20 crowd-sourced stations. Indonesia's own index is the ISPU, set by Kabapedal decree KEP-107/1997. It calls 0–50 good, 51–100 moderate and 101–199 unhealthy, and computes from PM10, not PM2.5. The two do not convert. The book's edition of 9 September 2026 calls the air good most of the year. The next day four resident areas read above 150, and no Bali station publishes an annual average to settle it.

February and March are when a landlord will move on price

February, March, October and November are when owners sit on empty stock. In July and August you have no leverage at all.

Ask for 5 to 15% off the asking price when you pay a year up front. CHECK No portal or association publishes a discount range for Bali, and no vacancy series exists either, so that band is agent practice rather than a measured figure.

Renting by the month is not free. Portals put a Canggu one-bedroom at IDR 28.4M a month ($1,609). Propertia put core Canggu one-bedrooms on yearly terms at IDR 12–18M ($680–1,020) on 13 August 2026. Monthly costs roughly double, and it is worth paying once.

Arrive in the first half of November

Land in early November. November brings 149.4 mm of rain against December's 299.3 mm, so you get the shallow end of the wet season rather than its middle. Rent by the month for three months, split between Canggu and either Ubud or Sanur. Ride the scooter in the rain, on the road you would take at six on a Friday.

The let then runs out in February, the cheapest month to sign, after you have lived through the worst weather of the year. Sign the year then, or leave.

A C1 tourist visa carries the trial. It gives 60 days, extends twice by 60 to 180 days, and wants proof of US$2,000 held for three months. It does not let you work. The Indonesian remote worker KITAS does, and it needs a foreign employer paying you US$60,000 a year.

Do not arrive in July or August. Peak season hands you the worst traffic, the highest prices, and a landlord with no reason to talk.
