Best time of year to move to Phuket

Arrive in September or October and sign a twelve-month lease while you are there. Those are the wettest months — September averages 350.4 mm of rain against February's 24.0 mm (WMO 1991–2020 normals) — and they are the cheapest. Phuket's median asking rent moved from THB 30,000 in January 2026 to THB 40,000 by April.

The season sets your rent, not just your weekend

The island runs on two halves, not four seasons. November to April is dry, full and expensive. May to October is wet, quiet and cheap. That one line decides most of what moving to Phuket costs you in the first year.

The asking prices show it. FazWaz read 54,628 enquiries across its network and put the island median at THB 35,000 ($1,060) a month. That median sat at THB 30,000 ($910) in January and February 2026 and reached THB 40,000 ($1,215) by April (thethaiger.com, 13 June 2026). A rate quoted in September is not the rate in January.

Rainfall is the 1991–2020 average from the World Meteorological Organization, read 10 September 2026. Temperature barely moves. Average highs run 31.8 °C to 34.4 °C across the year, lows 24.9 °C to 26.3 °C.

Wet days are contested. The WMO normals give September 18.9 of them and May 15.7. A local guide gives 23 and 21 for the same two months (phuket101.net, 5 August 2026). CHECK A 30-year normal and a website table are not counting the same thing.

The bad window is water, and it arrives twice

Too much of it first. September and October bring 350.4 mm and 336.0 mm, which is 30% of the island's 2,271.5 mm annual total (WMO 1991–2020). Each month runs about 19 wet days. Grey mornings, flooding on the low roads, and a sea nobody swims in.

Red flags on the west coast are not advisory

From May to October the Andaman side runs riptides. Prolonged rain in 2024 also brought a hillside down at Nakkerd Hill near the Big Buddha, killing thirteen people (phuket101.net, 5 August 2026).

Too little of it second. Piped supply is pressure-rotated through the dry months, which is rationing by schedule, not a cut-off. The province issued a water alert and a hundred-day countdown in March 2026. CHECK The governor said reserves would last 100 days without rain, then officials said on 24 March 2026 that the dry season was covered. The Phang Nga pipeline that would settle the question is at least three years away.

So March and April are the months that test you, not September. Ask two questions before you sign anything. Does the building have a storage tank, and does it have a pump?

The air is the good news, and nobody publishes a number for it

Phuket sits in a sea breeze. Air quality is generally good, with brief haze in March and April. If you left Chiang Mai or Bangkok over the burning season, this is the alternative inside the same country.

There is no published annual PM2.5 series for Phuket. CHECK No index carries one, so no honest yearly average exists to set against the Thai standard or the WHO guideline. What you can read is live. IQAir showed the island at AQI 48 on 10 September 2026 across 13 stations, with Ban Karon at 81 and Ban Ko Kaeo at 22.

Shop the lease between May and October, and sign for twelve months

Low season brings 20–40% off annual deals. CHECK That range is agent lore, not a published index. No vacancy series exists for Phuket condominiums. One tracker puts high-season monthly rates 40–100% above low-season ones (BAANLYY, 7 July 2026).

Ask for a twelve-month contract, not a monthly one. From November to April, "monthly" means the holiday rate, and it runs far above the annual one. Five to fifteen per cent off asking is normal on a one-year lease. CHECK That is an agent estimate, not a series.

The upfront money does not move with the season. It is two months deposit plus one month advance whenever you sign. Renting an apartment in Phuket covers that total, and the electricity billing on top of it.

Phuket, honestly runs the arithmetic the other way. It prices a January signature against a September one across the 25 buildings in its band table.

Come in September, and decide nothing until April

Land in the wettest month, at 350.4 mm, and see the island at its worst on day one. Stock is open, landlords want tenants, and the lease you sign carries you through the expensive half at low-season money.

Then live through March and April before you commit to a second year. Those carry the haze, the heat and the water schedule. If you still want it in April, you want the real thing.
