Phuket public transport

You need a scooter or a car. Phuket has no railway and one useful bus line. The Smart Bus runs the west coast at a flat THB 100 ($3.04), airport to Rawai (phuketsmartbus.com, read 10 September 2026). A 3 km ride-hailing hop costs THB 100–150 ($3.04–4.56). Police logged 26,515 no-licence cases in 2025 (thephuketnews.com, 30 January 2026).

Current at 9 September 2026 · rates of 8 September 2026, at THB 32.9 to US$1.

Phuket fines more foreign drivers than any city in this series

Police counted 26,515 no-licence cases on the island in 2025. Anyone moving to Phuket should read that number first. Foreigners took 20,901 of those fines — 11,855 Russians, 1,841 Chinese, 1,491 British and 1,442 French. They seized 1,737 rental bikes and cars (thephuketnews.com, 30 January 2026).

That is not bad luck. There are 503 number-plate cameras under Phuket Eye. Checkpoints sit on the main roads.

So the transport question here is a licence question. Almost everyone ends up on two wheels.

One bus line is the whole public network

There is no railway. A light-rail line from the airport to Chalong has been studied since 2015. The Transport Minister promised service by December 2031, and the plan was openly called flawed in January 2026 (bangkokpost.com, 9 January 2026). CHECK Nothing is funded and nothing is being built, so treat 2031 as a hope.

One flat-fare line covers the west coast, and the songthaews stop before dinner. Nothing reaches Kathu, Cape Panwa or Mai Khao, so the eight areas foreigners live in sort on driving time.

Grab runs the island and Bolt undercuts it by a quarter

Grab has the most drivers, and it alone may collect inside the airport terminal, at Exit 8 for international flights and Exit 1 for domestic. Bolt is 20 to 30% cheaper and cannot collect there. InDrive lets you name a price (phuket101.net, 4 September 2026).

A 3 km hop runs THB 100–150 ($3.04–4.56). A 10 km trip across areas is THB 250–400 ($7.60–12.15). Both come from a Numbeo tariff of about THB 100 to start plus THB 35 a km, read July 2026. CHECK No firm here prints a fare card.

The airport run needs checking. The book puts app fares to Patong at THB 750–1,250 ($23–38). A taxi guide of 16 August 2026 quotes THB 650–900 ($20–27) off-peak. CHECK The counter fare is THB 700–800 to Patong (thetraveler.org, 16 August 2026).

Most Phuket taxis will not turn on the meter

Meters exist and drivers refuse them. Flat rates are the norm here (thethaiger.com, 28 May 2026).

The island is carved into zones. Local firms hold pickup rights at named hotels, piers and beaches. Drivers from outside get warnings and blockades, and app drivers have been beaten (thethaiger.com, 28 May 2026). The airport still bans switching an app on inside the building (bangkokpost.com, 8 March 2026).

Tuk-tuks cost the most, at THB 200–400 ($6.08–12.15) within one beach and THB 500–800 ($15.20–24.30) between beaches. Agree the price first.

Your insurance turns on one line of your licence

Thailand accepts an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna treaties. A home licence plus an IDP is valid for a short stay.

The IDP must carry the motorcycle category. A car-only IDP does not cover a scooter. Police and insurers then treat you as having no licence, whatever your home licence says. Digital licences are refused. Bring the plastic card.

The fines are small. No helmet is THB 2,000 ($61) a head. Riding with no licence is THB 500–1,000 ($15–30), and they take the bike.

The cover is the costly part. A rental scooter carries the compulsory cover only. It pays THB 30,000–80,000 of medical costs ($912–2,430) and nothing else. No insurer pays for damage to the rental bike, and travel policies bar riding without a motorcycle licence. A bad afternoon is paid in cash.

Tick the motorcycle box before you fly

An IDP is sold at home in a day, and the motorcycle category costs nothing extra. Getting it wrong voids your cover.

A Thai licence is the real fix, and the Thai driver's licence rules are the gate. You need a passport with a non-immigrant visa, work permit or permanent residence, plus a residence certificate from Phuket Immigration. Tourists on visa-exempt or tourist entries cannot apply. On a DTV visa you sit in a grey area. Some offices accept it with a residence certificate and others refuse. CHECK Phuket is said to accept it. No 2026 source confirms that.

The fee is tiny. A first two-year licence is THB 105 ($3.19) for a motorcycle and THB 205 ($6.23) for a car, then THB 255 and THB 505 at the five-year renewal. CHECK Those come from the DLT schedule and were not checked again for 2026. Phuket, honestly walks the Thalang counter in order, with the documents, the three tests and the 50-question paper.

A scooter is THB 4,500 a month and a car is five times that

A Honda Click costs THB 250–350 a day, or THB 4,000–5,000 a month ($122–152). Deposits are THB 3,000–10,000 ($91–304). A small auto car is THB 550–1,400 a day ($16.70–42.55) (phuket101.net, 3 September 2026).

Gasohol 95 cost THB 38.29 a litre ($1.16) on 2 September 2026, and diesel THB 39.14 ($1.19) (nationthailand.com). There are no tolls and mall parking is free.

The book budgets THB 4,500 a month ($137) for transport on the basic tier and THB 8,000 ($243) on the comfortable one. Both assume a scooter. The top tier is THB 25,000 ($760), a car.

Walkability starts in Phuket Town and stops there

Phuket Town is the only district you can walk. Old Town is flat and three EV bus routes cover the rest. Patong walks too, in the sense that Bangla Road and the beach are ten minutes apart.

Everywhere else needs wheels. Bang Tao, Kamala, Rawai, Kathu and Mai Khao spread along hills and highways with no real footpaths.

Three points choke the island: Thepkrasattri Road, the Heroines' Monument junction and Patong Hill. No global traffic index ranks Phuket, so every claim about its jams is hearsay.

  • Which visa classes Phuket Immigration will issue a residence certificate to, and the route if yours is not
  • What the airport gap costs you: 30 to 40 minutes from Bang Tao against 60 to 90 from Rawai, priced by how often you fly
